Karaoke inMinneapolis

The Uptown VFW runs karaoke every night of the week until 1:45 in the morning, and it is not even the neighbourhood with the deepest bench. That would be Northeast, where the Palace, the U Otter Stop and the Vegas Lounge all keep seven-night schedules of their own.

Northeast Minneapolis is the district. Four confirmed venues, three of them singing every night: Northeast Palace on 4th Street from 9pm, the Vegas Lounge on Central to 2am, and the U Otter Stop Inn, which runs 8pm to 2am daily and adds a happy-hour session at 4pm on Saturdays. The 1029 Bar covers Wednesday through Sunday from its corner on Marshall Street.

The other thing to know is that the Twin Cities sing at the veterans' halls. Four VFW posts and an Eagles club hold confirmed karaoke nights here, led by the James Ballentine "Uptown" VFW, where the calendar reads the same every day: karaoke, 9pm to 1:45am. Six venues across the metro run all seven nights, and a post on Lyndale is one of them.

Sing at the post

The Uptown VFW is the headline, but the pattern runs right through the metro. Fred Babcock VFW Post 5555 in Richfield sings Tuesdays and Fridays from 7 to 11pm — civilised hours, done before midnight. Kraus Hartig VFW in Spring Lake Park gives Monday to a host called Rock & Roll John, 7 to 10pm.

Shakopee VFW Post 4046 runs its karaoke from 8:30 to close, and the New Brighton Eagles post does the first and third Friday of the month from 8 to midnight, plus every Saturday night. Membership halls, early starts, hosts on first-name terms with the room — it is a genuinely different way to run a karaoke scene, and it works.

The St Paul week

St Paul spreads its five confirmed venues across the calendar. Mancini's Char House on West Seventh takes Tuesdays. Tin Cup's on Rice Street takes Wednesdays. Mounds Park Sports Bar on Hudson Road covers Sundays from 8:30 — and Wednesdays too, after the bingo finishes.

Saturday is the big night east of the river: Joe and Stan's on West Seventh from 9:30 to 1:30, Mcknight's on Burns Avenue from 9 to 1, and Park Grove Bowl down in Saint Paul Park, where the karaoke shares the building with the lanes.

Early, occasional, and on an actual stage

The Schooner Tavern on 27th Avenue runs Monday karaoke from 5 to 7pm — before dinner, finished before most rooms open — then comes back Tuesday at 9 for the conventional version. Monday is also the night The Saloon on Hennepin puts karaoke on its Main Stage, 7:30 to 11:30, and Eagle MPLS takes Wednesdays on Washington Avenue, 8pm to midnight.

Further out, the schedules get particular. Cy's in Chaska sings the first and third Saturday of the month at 9:30. Steve-O's on West Broadway runs Wednesdays at 10 and Saturdays at 9 with a host named Dwayne. And Babes Place in Shakopee takes Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 9pm to 1am — a small-town bar with a bigger karaoke calendar than most city ones.
