The city's karaoke divides cleanly, and each part is its own kind of pleasure. Koreatown stacks private rooms on top of each other on a single block of West 32nd Street, and the night runs until 4am as a matter of routine. The East Village and Lower East Side do bars with a stage and a queue. Queens, along Northern Boulevard and Broadway, is Koreatown's idea with more room, lower prices and even later hours.

Koreatown: ten karaoke venues on one block
West 32nd Street between Fifth and Broadway has ten confirmed karaoke venues on it. Almost none of them are at street level — they are on the third, fourth, sixth, seventh, eleventh floors, behind a lift and a sign. If you have walked down it and seen nothing, that is why. These four are the ones worth knowing first.

Downtown and midtown, karaoke mostly means an ordinary bar that hands you a microphone in front of everybody. No booking, no hourly rate, and the wait is the price you pay.

St Marks Place, and the rest of the East Village
Sing Sing Karaoke at 9 St Marks Place and St. Marks Karaoke at number 6 are on opposite sides of the same short street, both running private rooms seven nights a week until 4am. One of the few places you can price-check karaoke by crossing the road.
The rest of the neighbourhood fans out from there. Sing Sing Ave A at 81 Avenue A opens at 4pm Thursday through Sunday and 6pm the rest of the week, to 4am throughout. On Orchard Street, Baby Grand at 187 runs to 3am on Thursday through Saturday, and Karaoke Boho Orchard at 152 opens at 2pm on weekends. And on Tuesday nights only, Pianos on Ludlow runs karaoke from 11pm to 3am.
Queens: the other Koreatown
Northern Boulevard in Flushing does the same thing 32nd Street does, and stays open even later. 101 KTV at 135-25 Northern is open 2pm to 4am every day of the week, fourteen hours daily. Singing Karoke Club at 156-16B runs Sunday through Tuesday and Thursday through Saturday, to 4am on Friday and Saturday.
Further west in Jackson Heights, Uptop New York on Broadway opens at noon on Saturday and Sunday and runs to 3:30am. If the plan is a long day rather than a late night, Queens is where that is actually possible.
Nights that are their own thing
The Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street runs two: Fridays at 6pm with no cover, and Thursdays at 5pm downstairs in the Eight Ball Lounge alongside the pool tables.
Cornerstone Tavern on 2nd Avenue runs five nights, and the Friday and Saturday sessions do not start until midnight — the rare karaoke night you can arrive at after something else has already ended. Over in Williamsburg, Chino Grande on Grand Street goes Wednesday through Saturday, starting at 10pm.
