Karaoke inCincinnati

Tokyo Kitty gives Cincinnati a proper karaoke palace, main stage and private rooms both, with weekend room hours from 1pm. The rest of the city sings at neighbourhood bars where the night carries its host's name — and knowing the host is half the point.

Start with Tokyo Kitty on Race Street: main-stage karaoke Tuesday through Sunday, the metro's only confirmed private rooms alongside, and weekend room hours that begin at 1pm. No other venue in the city looks anything like it.

The other twenty-one confirmed venues are neighbourhood bars, most running one to three nights, and a striking number of them tell you exactly who is holding the microphone: Aunt T and Uncle Don, KJ 'The Wizard', DJ/KJ Moose, E-Rock. Between them every night of the week is covered, and the thickest run of nights sits out on the west side.

The night is named for its host

Cincinnati credits its KJs the way other cities credit bands. PooR Michael'S Sports Bar, up on Hamilton Avenue, runs karaoke with Aunt T every Wednesday at 7pm and with Uncle Don on Friday and Saturday at 9. The Oak Tavern in Oakley has E-Rockin' Karaoke every Monday — hosted, naturally, by E-Rock — and it runs 6 to 10pm, the earliest karaoke in the metro.

The pattern holds at the edges: DJ BADASH runs the Olde Village Tavern's two nights from 10pm to close, DJ Brian takes Friday and Saturday at The Liberty Inn, DJ Doug holds Saturdays at DeCanter Lounge in Harrison, and Putters Sports Grill pairs Thursday college night — $2 big beers — with D.J. Kara.

Small, but the week is covered

Outside Tokyo Kitty, the most nights anywhere is Legends Bar & Grill in Hamilton: Tuesday through Saturday, 10pm to 2am. The Brass Rail on Robertson Avenue covers the weekend proper — Friday to Sunday, 9pm to 2am — and The Lounge Bar on Beechmont holds Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for the east side. Silverton Cafe sings Thursdays, 9pm to 1am.

Northside quietly has a two-venue strip: Tillie's Lounge at 4042 Hamilton Avenue, and Karaoke Fantastic a block up at 4163 — a venue open only on Sundays, 7 to 10pm. Between the two of them, that one street covers Monday, Friday and Sunday.
