Karaoke inDetroit

The every-night karaoke bars of metro Detroit are in Taylor, Hazel Park and Sterling Heights, not downtown. Forty-two confirmed venues spread across two dozen towns, three of them are bowling alleys, and an unusual number of the hosts are known by name.

Detroit sings in a ring. Warren holds four confirmed venues, Taylor, Hazel Park and Westland three each, and the map keeps going — Wyandotte down the river, Clinton Township up Gratiot, Ferndale and Royal Oak along Woodward. The bars that never skip a night are all suburban: Cavill's in Taylor, Eddies in Hazel Park, and the Round Table at Sterling Heights' Wellington Pub, which runs karaoke with a DJ seven days a week from 9pm to close.

The city itself keeps five confirmed venues, and they could hardly be less alike: Sid Gold's Request Room downtown on Broadway, a Saturday-night standby in Midtown, a west-side saloon that takes Wednesdays, and a private-room studio on Puritan Avenue where the karaoke is done by 9pm.

The lanes sing too

Three of the metro's confirmed karaoke venues are bowling alleys. Imperial Lanes in Clinton Township runs it Wednesday through Saturday, 9:30pm to 2am — hours plenty of ordinary bars here don't keep. Vision Lanes in Westland takes Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in its All Star Grille and Music Bar.

Ford Lanes on Van Born Road rounds out the set with Friday night karaoke. Few metros treat the bowling alley as a standing karaoke room; Detroit has three of them at it.

Corridor by corridor

Northeast, Warren backs up Tipsy McStaggers with Johnny B Good's on Groesbeck, Fridays and Saturdays from 9pm, and Renegades in Garden City covers the west with four nights, Thursday through Sunday, 9pm to 2am. Chatters in Westland runs five nights at 9:30 — including Sunday, which most of the metro takes off.

Along Woodward, Ferndale offers a choice of temperaments: Sneakers Pub, a self-described dive bar with karaoke, and Soho, which gives Sunday night to the singers. In Hazel Park, Max Dugan's starts its Thursday night at 7pm — sharp, by its own insistence — two hours before almost anyone else opens the book.

Downriver belongs to Saturday. Speedboat Bar & Grill on Biddle Avenue in Wyandotte runs 9pm to 1am, and O'Malley's in Livonia does Friday and Saturday with no cover — the one bar here that advertises the fact.

Ask for the host by name

Detroit karaoke comes with a person attached. Ron hosts at the Cloverleaf in Southgate, which sings Thursday through Saturday. Thursday at Big League Brews in Taylor is Jamie's night; Thursday at Tailgators on Van Born Road belongs to DJ Betty from 10pm. In Westland the host is the venue — Stacyoke, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

And then there is Joe T, who plays the Northville Community Center at 1pm on the third Tuesday of the month. Daytime karaoke at the community centre is not a thing most cities have. Detroit does.
