This is the reverse of most American cities, and it is a luxury once you are used to it. The default here is a noraebang: a private room booked by the hour for your own group, with its own screens and microphones and a door that closes. They line 6th, 8th, Olympic and Wilshire in Koreatown, several to a block, and they run to 2am as a matter of course — one of them to 4am.
If what you want instead is a stage, a queue and an audience of strangers, LA has a whole circuit of that too. It lives mostly in Los Feliz, Silver Lake and the north-east, one night per bar, plus a west-side institution that runs its open mic seven nights a week.

Little Tokyo, which does it differently
Two miles east of Koreatown there is a second, much smaller cluster with its own habits. Max Karaoke Studio on South Alameda opens at 1pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and 3pm the rest of the week — the earliest room in the city, and genuinely useful if you want to do this in daylight.
Round the corner, Ohjah on East 1st runs open-mic karaoke from 8:30pm to 1:30am every night of the week, and Heck Yeah Karaoke on East 2nd does Friday and Saturday from 6pm to 9pm only — an early session that is over before most of the city has started.
The east side circuit
Los Feliz and the north-east carry most of LA's open-mic karaoke, and almost all of it is a single night a week — so the scene works as a rota rather than a destination.
Bigfoot Lodge on Los Feliz Boulevard takes Mondays at 10pm. The OffBeat on York Boulevard has Tuesdays. Drawing Room on Hillhurst does Sundays from 9:30pm, or thereabouts. Lotus Lounge on North Vermont runs Fridays, and The Fable out on Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock runs a late Thursday session to 1:45am alongside a shorter Monday one.
The one with the band
Break Room 86, tucked behind the Line Hotel on Wilshire, runs Tuesday through Saturday from 9pm to 2am and does both formats at once: private karaoke rooms and live band karaoke in an eighties-themed bar. If the group cannot decide between singing to each other and singing to a room, it is the one place that does not force the choice.
