Highland Drive, twice over
One street carries two very different schedules. The Highlander Club at 6194 South sings every night at 9 — the third of the city's three nightly rooms. Up the same road at 3928 South, A Bar Named Sue runs Sue's Karaoke on Monday and Thursday at 10pm, a late start for the committed.
Between them in spirit, if not on the map, sits Club 48 in Murray: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Five nights puts it level with the Tavernacle — the two busiest calendars here short of running all seven.
The single nights, in order
Monday opens at Poplar Street Pub, 9pm. Tuesday and Wednesday belong to Keys On Main, and Wednesday is the busy shift: Area 51 runs karaoke at the downstairs bar from 9 — alternative, rock, metal, pop and campy fun, in the venue's own inventory — while Old Towne Tavern in Midvale starts at 7:30.
Thursday and Sunday are Club Try-Angles nights, each one billed as legendary. The weekend belongs to Catrachos in West Valley City, where the hosts have names and shifts: Jhoanny from 5pm on Friday and Saturday, Miguel Ángel from noon on Sunday. Piper Down on State Street closes the week, Sunday 9:30 to midnight.
