Bellaire Boulevard is the reason to take Houston seriously as a karaoke city. Seven confirmed venues sit along it, most of them KTV lounges renting private rooms by the hour, and four of them share one address at 9889. You can change your mind about where you are singing without leaving the car park.

The rest of the city runs a different night entirely: free or cheap open-mic karaoke in neighbourhood bars, Wednesday through Saturday for the most part, starting around 9pm. Both are good nights. They are just not remotely the same night.

4 confirmed venues

Bellaire Boulevard: the KTV corridor

Private rooms, by the hour, all open seven nights a week. This is the densest karaoke in Texas.

  • A Gogo KTV

    9889 Bellaire Blvd · Asiatown

Open 11am to 2am, every day — fifteen hours daily, and the earliest opening on the strip. One of the four at this address.

  • Yes KTV

    9889 Bellaire Blvd · Asiatown

Does both formats — sing to the room or take a private room — and bills itself as the only BYOB karaoke club in Houston. Rooms in several sizes.

  • KTV Happy Zone

    9889 Bellaire Blvd, Suite 207 · Asiatown

5pm to 2am on weekdays, opening at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. The long-weekend-afternoon option.

  • MTV Karaoke

    12148 Bellaire Blvd · Asiatown

Further out along the same road, open every night to 2am. Worth the extra few minutes when 9889 is full, which on a Saturday it will be.

Karaoke in the rest of Houston

Away from Bellaire, it is bars with a stage and a queue — plus two private-room options that are nowhere near Asiatown.

  • Spotlight Karaoke

    5901 Westheimer Rd · Galleria

Seven nights, and open from 3pm Monday to Thursday. Does both the public room and private rooms, which makes it the flexible answer out by the Galleria.

  • Nightingale

    2700 Milam St · Midtown

Private rooms in Midtown rather than out west — Wednesday to Saturday, 8pm to 2am, and midnight on Wednesdays.

  • Three Sheets

    1900 S Kirkwood Dr · Westside

Free karaoke Wednesday through Saturday, with the main sessions Thursday to Saturday from 9:30pm to 1:30am.

  • JR.'s Bar & Grill

    808 Pacific St · Montrose

Sunday Funday karaoke with MC Kofi from 6pm, then Blackberri takes over from 9pm to 2am. Two hosts, one very long Sunday.

The building with four karaoke bars in it

9889 Bellaire Boulevard contains A Gogo KTV, Yes KTV, KTV Happy Zone and Neway Restaurant & Lounge — four separate confirmed karaoke venues at one address, all open seven nights a week until 2am.

They are not identical. A Gogo opens earliest, at 11am. Yes KTV is BYOB and does open-room singing as well as private rooms. Neway runs both formats from 5pm. Happy Zone opens at 2pm at weekends. If you are organising something for a group that cannot agree, this address does most of the negotiating for you.

The corridor continues either side of it: 麦客量贩MIC KTV at 8504 opens at 2pm Friday through Sunday, 4seasons at 12000 runs six nights and closes Tuesdays, and MTV Karaoke is out at 12148.

The neighbourhood circuit

Houston's open-mic karaoke reaches right across the city — most bars run one or two nights, so wherever you are, there is usually one close by.

Cockpit Bar & Grill out by Hobby Airport runs five nights from 4pm and describes itself as Houston's airport karaoke bar. LA Club on West Bellfort does five nights from 8pm. Christian's Tailgate in the Heights starts at 9:30pm on Friday and Saturday and runs to 2am, and PJ's Sports Bar on West Gray does Wednesday and Friday from 9pm.

For a single night: La Iguana takes Mondays, Chayn's on Cypress Creek Parkway does Wednesdays from 8pm, Echoes on Richmond runs Tuesdays at 9pm, and NJ's on Mangum does Fridays.
