Virginia Beach carries the every-night load, and carries it easily. Dockers keeps a dedicated karaoke stage going nightly, Stooges sings seven nights a week, and the metro's private-room venues — Volcano and The Grammy Karaoke — are on this side of the water too, both open from the middle of the day.

Across the bridges and tunnels, the hosts get billing: a midweek run at Cap'n Ron's in Norfolk, weekends at Hank's Pub in Chesapeake, Fridays at the Twisted Pig in Portsmouth, each with a regular behind the songbook. Thursday is the night

No other night spreads like it. In Norfolk, Suite 1200 downtown and Dolce Luxury Lounge both make Thursday their karaoke night, and PBR Norfolk puts karaoke on its stage the first Thursday of every month. In Virginia Beach, Lendy's runs karaoke every Thursday. In Hampton, Charm'd Lounge takes Thursday evenings. And Cap'n Ron's and Sly Clyde both land their weeks on it too.

The odd one out is the earliest: Decoys Seafood in Suffolk runs its Thursday karaoke at the Blind Duck Tiki Bar around dinnertime — finished before most of the others have opened the book.

Hosts, bands and the odd format

Karaoke here is a circuit of regular hosts as much as a list of rooms. One runs the midweek at Cap'n Ron's; another holds Hank's Pub at the weekend. At Eagles Nest Rockin' Country Bar in Chesapeake, Tuesday karaoke runs as long as anything in the region. And the Twisted Pig in Portsmouth takes Fridays, done early enough for a second stop.

A few formats go past the songbook. Krossroads in Virginia Beach puts live bands behind its karaoke on Fridays and Saturdays, The Vanguard Brewpub & Distillery in Hampton stages emo-night karaoke, and Scandals Live runs its Wednesday open mic with a pair of resident hosts.

Saturday, everywhere at once

If Thursday belongs to the lounges, Saturday belongs to everywhere else. In Virginia Beach alone, the nightclub Peabody's, Ready Room and the pool-table bar Inland Reef all run Saturday karaoke.

Across the water it holds too. Josh's Bar & Grill in downtown Hampton pairs a DJ with karaoke on Saturday nights. And Busky's in Chesapeake sings Saturday and Sunday both.
