The rooms spread one per neighbourhood rather than one per street. Echo Box in Dupont Circle, Wok and Roll in Chinatown — its rooms open from 11am — Muzette in Adams Morgan, DC's first private-room karaoke bar, Live-K at the Wharf with fifteen rooms and a main stage, and Ginza on 8th Street SE. Most run to 2am, and several to 3 at the weekend.

Cross a bridge and the sign-up sheet takes over. Columbia Pike alone carries four confirmed venues on its way out of Arlington, ending in Annandale, where the metro's Korean rooms have settled. The always-on bars live out here too — Arlington, Alexandria, the Maryland suburbs — and between them they keep every night of the week singing.

Seven nights, three jurisdictions

The always-on list is long here — eleven confirmed venues run all seven nights — but it mostly isn't in Washington. Inside the line it is just Echo Box and Wok and Roll. In Virginia, Freddie's Beach Bar in Arlington runs karaoke nightly, Rock It Grill on King Street in Alexandria does seven nights from 9:30pm to 1:30am, and Queen's Gambit down in Woodbridge starts at 9 every night. Bolor tuv on George Mason Drive in Arlington keeps room hours of noon to 1am, daily.

Maryland holds the rest. iRock KTV in Gaithersburg rents rooms every day from 5pm — to 2am on Friday and Saturday — and Em Heart Karaoke up the road lists its hours as midnight to 11:59pm, which is a long way of saying it never really closes. Live K on National Plaza in Oxon Hill runs daily too, from noon at the weekend.

Kostume, Drunkaoke and the request room

The District's most portable night is Kostume Karaoke, which happens at other people's bars: Saturdays at Solly's Tavern on U Street from 7pm to 1am, and the second Wednesday of the month at Trusty's on Pennsylvania Avenue SE. Madam's Organ in Adams Morgan runs Drunkaoke — karaoke with a two-drink minimum — every Sunday and Thursday, and Green Lantern gives Tuesday over to Latin karaoke, with Sunday and Wednesday nights besides.

Sid Gold's Request Room on 5th Street NE runs Wednesday through Saturday, from 6pm midweek and to 1:30am at the weekend. Zeppelin in Shaw takes Thursday to Saturday, starting at 9:30 or 10:30 depending on the night. And The Meeting Place on 17th Street NW does Fridays from 7pm to 1am, free.

Maryland, further out

Past the Beltway venues the Maryland side settles into weekend rhythm. Timbuktu in Hanover runs Friday and Saturday, 8:30pm to 1:30am, and Stained Glass Pub in Silver Spring takes Thursdays and Saturdays from 8:30pm to 12:30.

The most orderly night in the metro is Thursday at The Club at Andrews, on the base itself: Karaoke & Oldies but Goodies with DJ Chris, 6 to 10pm, done and dusted before most of the District has opened its book.
